Big Dumb Joke
02:53
|
|||
Your house fell apart
As you watched from afar
You were sure that it was her father's car
Pulling out of the lot
A little fast
In that moment, you knew
It would always fall through
She'd never let herself be held on to
At least not by you
So you laugh
Like it all was just a big dumb joke
That no one was in on
And you think of all the times you wrote
Her name on your hand
Your head's in the sand
So you go for a walk
Just a couple of blocks
And you strain to pull all the strings apart
But they're caught in a knot
In the pit of your stomach
Oh, the echo, he knew
'It's too good to be true'
'What's your deal, kid? Why don't you get a clue?'
'There's no place here for you'
'And your fistful of lovebirds'
Just continue down that one way road
And don't you dare turn to watch her go
Keep your eyes locked and your head hung low
If you want to keep safe what's left of your faith
Find a nice spot to put your shoes
One that's pure and easily amused
Focus in and let it choose
The make of your days, get your head back in place
No, it's not saving face, call it saving a space

Someone Else's Fault
02:15
|
|||
Thought I could figure you out
I figured with some prodding and the time allotting
You'd open up
But I got caught up in your lies
Don't you know they'll surprise you
When you are the most vulnerable
While you feel that nothing ever changes
It's all arranging in a way you won't notice
Till one day
It's too bad you never had the patience
With every invasion of your space
You fall back into place
Oh, you got another out to cop
Every time you find you're under watch
But it's always someone else's fault, isn't it?
Why do everything in spite?
Start a fight when you feel like
There aren't enough bright eyes upon you
It really only comes off as
Desperate and half-assed
You wonder why we're so fast to assume
It's all a clever facade
A plot so slightly off
You're afraid you'll get caught and start to worry
But a handshake can never steal your thoughts
Don't you fret, they all will rot
Nicely once you've bought the jury
Do you ever wish it would stop
When you find you have hit the top
But it's always someone else's fault, isn't it

She
03:29
|
|||
She stood there with two others
I think one was her brother, but I can't say for sure
As we came into her view
I watched as her eyes moved to my eyes from the floor
Her face, lit in the dim light
Was freckled and quite striking, I thought
I waited for a slight smile
Or perhaps an acknowledging nod
Instead, I just felt a bit unnerved
Like she was sizing me up with every step I walked
Still, I couldn't shake the words
Resounding loud in my head: 'You could be what you're not'
I strolled right past without a glance
And in my right ear I heard her quickly chant
A simple phrase: 'I like your shoes'
But I didn't know she'd meant me till I'd moved
Outside, the smoke pouring out my mouth
Made me grin, I found out I felt strong for the first
Time in quite a long while
Her company in that aisle made me twinge and burn
She came out with a big bag
Of Hershey Kisses and a music mag
Our eyes met again but now she smiled
And I felt like I could run a thousand miles
I shivered as they walked away
Her purse jumped up and down quick, it was made
To look like an electric guitar
I turned around and got into the car
She was there with two others
I think one was her brother, he acted like he was
I tried my best to run back into
Her before they went to wherever, but that wasn't
Gonna happen, evidently
I laughed and knew she'd sent me back in time
Cos for once I felt like I had been
Whoever I'd have been if I'd been fine

Two Birds
05:47
|
|||
The city boy had enough of the lights
He wanted to go somewhere where he could lay in the dark at night
And shoot his thoughts straight out into the emptiness
And keep firing till there's nothing left
He packed his things and left his father a note
'I'm sorry to leave, but I'm a whale, I don't fit in this goldfish bowl
I'm headed out West where I can throw up the reigns
And break free of these social restraints
Can't you see that this dead city hates me'
For the country girl, it was a hard-knock life
Things just hadn't been the same since that night her papa died
Her mama fell ill with the typhoid fever
Her fucking coward of a brother chose to leave them
He said he couldn't do a thing, they didn't need him
But they needed him then and they needed him now
These two tired burnt-out women in this tired burnt-out house
Her mama couldn't work no more, it was up to the girl
So she got a job checking bags at the corner store
But it just couldn't support what they paid for
You lie at night and say you're okay alone
But take a look around, you can't say this house is a home
There's something missing, you strain to listen
To a faint voice on the telephone
That can't keep you awake
The city boy pulled into the lot
He shaded his eyes with his hand, pulled a smoke from the back he'd bought
At the gas station, he came in slowly
Taking time to absorb all the lonely
Country people walking around in the shop
She stood out from all of the rest
Standing over by a big white sign that read, 'We serve only the best'
He found himself in love and walking over
To the spot where she was all alone
And when her eyes met his eyes, he told her
'I'm a city boy, I got a brand new car'
The country girl told him, 'Boy, you don't know you are'
The boy shot back, 'Well, I know who I want to be
And I know who I want to be with, that's you'
The country girl, she didn't know what to say
She looked him dead in the eye, how she could always get her way
The boy stared back and she could see he wasn't fooling
'I'm a man, and this man wants you'
And she ran back to her mama's soothing
'I haven't been with a boy in a long, long time
I'm afraid, it ain't something I'm accustomed to'
'Honey pie, he's got the money, that you've got to keep in mind
Oh you gotta go, you gotta take your chances
He's a man and a man needs answers
You know his hands hold the plans of your time'
So, the country girl, she marched right back down
To the city boy standing there with his two feet on the ground
The girl said, 'Boy, I'll come with you, but
That don't mean I'll be with you
What I say right now is only the truth'
So, the boy said, 'Girl, you just wait and see
I know in no time at all you'll be falling hard for me'
He took her by the hand and they walked down the sidewalk
Their shoes smudged faded drawings of white chalk
And the girl let herself open and talk
For the first time in her whole life
He made her forget all the pain, all the awful sleepless nights
They crossed the street as the cars screamed past
One came on a little too fast
And through the air like a stone they were cast
Killed two birds, one stone
Never would have gone anywhere
Better to leave it alone
Killed two birds, one stone
Drop what you're doing and pick up the phone
Killed two birds, one stone
Killed two birds, one stone
The paramedics did their best but they'd gone
Before their bodies were cold
Killed two birds, one stone

No one's ever going, I'm gonna keep it overflowing, you'll go no
No one's ever going, I'm gonna keep it overflowing, go no
No one's ever going, I'm gonna keep it overflowing, saying no no no
No one's ever going, I'm gonna keep it overflowing, go no
So we say what we want to say
And I'll go where I want to go
And we'll say what I want to say
And we'll go where I want to go
We'll say what I want to say
And we'll go go go where I want to go
And we'll say what I want to say
Aww
Yes, I see that you're frightened
That don't explain why you're crying
Yes, I see that you're frightened
Yes, I see that you're frightened
But I don't understand why you're crying
I only want to see how you're crying
Taking a look back
I'm not gonna act like I'm okay
But I will kiss you anyway
Taking a look back
You don't gotta explain why you're okay
But I'll look back anyway
Oh and here we go with all the people overflowing saying no
Oh and here we go and the people overflowing saying no
Oh and here we go with all the people overflowing saying no no no
Oh and here we go with all the people overflowing saying no
So we'll say what I want to say
And we'll go where I want to go
And we'll say what I want to say
And we'll go where I want to go
Sing with me now

She a Mountain
01:08
|
|||
Snow-white hands slide
Along the banister
And Mama sleeping upstairs
Slow, nice, and fine
Drown the fan out, her
Whistles and growls, oh whistles and growls
Just pushing around the air
Fork, plate, rain date
Brother-brother tie
Holding big hand, the bus-stop
School fight, hit right, stark white
Bottles, caught inside
Pocket lunch, bag of boxtops
Cool, cool, cool
She a mountain
Cool, cool, cool
She a mountain of covers

Winterholes

Dig winter holes
Dogs out in the snow
Dream of better things
Children flutter wings

I been looking for a way out of
This maze for quite some time
Ever since you told me to shut my mouth
I only speak my mind
And when I find myself alone and grey
With only the rainclouds for company
Even then I never know what to say
So I don't say a thing

I'm not used to coming through
More accustomed to a falling out
I'm trying hard now as I can for you
Not to trip up on some stupid doubt
You got your hopes set up way up high
Way on up there where the air is thin
Limit's supposed to be the sky
I'm trying not to let you down again
It's starting to come to me
I didn't know about, I hadn't figured it out
But it's starting to come to me now
A little bit too late
I can't see anything you've done
Any reason for the trouble you've got
You haven't hurt anyone
Compared to most, I'd say that's saying quite a lot
I can't help you when you're sad
That's a constant source of pain to me
Because I want to really bad
Though you make it seem like nothing
